Bud Dome III

INDOOR RECREATION FACILITY IN ST. LOUIS, MO

Designed and Built for Bud Dome, this project is a structural renovation for a ball field recreation area.

The structural renovation of an existing facility was designed to transform the space into a premier indoor ball field recreation area, combining creative design solutions with advanced engineering. A key challenge of the project involved the removal of four structural columns within a 44’ x 44’ bay grid, enabling the creation of a clear-span area measuring 134’ x 132’ to support unobstructed play. This was achieved with minimal reduction in clear height through the integration of a new steel structural system, ensuring both functionality and structural integrity.

Mechanical system upgrades were implemented to provide efficient conditioning of the expansive recreational space, creating a comfortable environment for year-round use. New T5 fluorescent light fixtures were installed to deliver bright, uniform illumination across the playing surface, enhancing visibility and safety during activities.

Additional features include the installation of perimeter protection and safety netting to ensure guest safety and maintain operational flexibility. The play surface was outfitted with new artificial turf and a custom baseball diamond configuration to accommodate a variety of sporting activities.

The project required comprehensive coordination of all design and zoning elements to support the implementation of the facility’s new use. This included navigating regulatory approvals and ensuring compliance with local requirements while maintaining project timelines and budget.
